The school was in a deplorable state with dilapidated walls along with old and broken furniture. Although the school did not face an issue of enrolment, the students found the ambience quite undesirable to attend the classes eagerly.
The enjoyable DOSTI modules, which are a mix of interesting stories and plenty of physical games helped in reducing the problem of absenteeism. The students loved the lessons so much that in their enthusiasm they translated the DOSTI anthem and DOSTI stories in their regional language i.e. Sindhi.
The anthem, DOSTI stories and the story characters are now pasted on the walls of the school, adding color to the classrooms. Since the DOSTI lessons were introduced, the students became quite keen to learn about life-skills and ways of living a healthier life-style. For instance, inspired by the story on hygiene and cleanliness the students started keeping their classes and school clean.
Recently, a private school in the same neighbourhood closed down. However, looking at the progress of Government Public School Jherruck after the introduction of DOSTI, parents preferred to enrol their children in a government school rather than another private school. As a result, now Govt. Public School Jherruck caters to 50% additional students with regular attendance. Yet another highlight of DOSTI in this vicinity!
“The fact of the matter is that schools in our Union Council are running because of projects such as TACS. Students here lack the motivation to go to school; the academic infrastructure is in a deplorable state, which doesn’t help us either. However, with well-thought out programs like DOSTI, interactive DOSTI lessons, relatable story characters and plenty of physical games, we can see the students are keen to learn and enjoy their time in school.” –Mir Jinsar Ali: Member of Taleem Committee, UC Sangrar, Sukkur
